How to Reset a Skoda Key
I just received a message that my infotainment device is low on battery and requires to be replaced. It's not the 1st time, and last time I visited an auto dealer, they replaced it for free in 2 minutes and said it will work again.
Switch the ignition ON and lock the vehicle mechanically. Press the unlock button five times at intervals of one second on the remote control. A short horn tone will be heard.
EEPROM Method
It can take some time for a professional locksmith to reprogram your keys if it ceases to function. In many instances the EEPROM is scanned to determine the unique code of the car. This process is risky, and there's a good possibility of destroying the data within the module. This is why it's best to leave it to an experienced locksmith.
An EEPROM (non-volatile) memory is used in a wide variety of electronic devices like car keys. It stores data, which includes the unique authentication codes or encryption keys that are recognised by your car when you use the key to unlock or start it. These codes are important because they inform the car that you've got the correct key and are authorized to drive it.
If your EEPROM is damaged, the keys will stop working. The problem is typically caused by using the incorrect key, or accidentally hitting one of the buttons. You can try to reset it by using a special tool but this method is not guaranteed to work. It is recommended to hire a professional with extensive knowledge of programming keys for automobiles.
To reset your EEPROM you must remove the Kessy Module from the vehicle. It is located above the accelerator pedal, on the left side of the vehicle. Take off the plastic clip that secures it with the help of a screwdriver. Then, you can unplug the two connectors to electrical power and remove it from the vehicle. You can then read the EEPROM using a SOIC8 or micro pincers connected to a programmer. Once you have all the information you can save the file and write it back into the EEPROM.
To read the EEPROM data, you can use a program like PonyProg and click Read Device. The EEPROM dump appears as a hexadecimal array of characters. Three hex numbers are noteworthy that are KEY_CODE (key_code) and the key_count (key_count) and the V_ARG_ENABLED. It is necessary to change all other hex values to 00 to "virginize" the chip. Once you have done this, you can flash the chip to restore its functionality.
Ignition Method
This method requires an additional key that works to activate the car's security system. It might not work for all vehicles however it is able to reset the key fob when it isn't working or the battery has gone out. It should work if you have tried pressing the buttons repeatedly (people often attempt to press the unlock button repeatedly).
This method requires that you switch on the ignition and keep it on. Next make sure that the driver's door is locked of the car with the second key. Remote Control Method
If you just bought a new remote control but it doesn't function in your car, it's possible that the seller didn't set it up to match your car. It could also be that the terminals of the battery are loose (look for this, they may appear a bit loose to the touch, and then sometimes soldered in the wrong place) It is important to carefully solder them back in place should bring your key fob back to working order. If you're not sure about this type of repair, consult a professional auto technician.
Turn off the ignition and secure the car from the inside by using another key that is not matched (this resets memory position 1). Enter channel "01" (may be channel "21" in certain Audi models). Insert the new keyfob into the driver's door, and then hit the unlock button twice in less than 5 seconds.
Repeat this procedure for up 4 additional remote controls. Be sure to turn off the ignition in between programming each remote. You should hear a sound each time you successfully program the remote.
